Book Release/Birthday Celebration
G a b r i e l a G a r c i a M e d i n a "In the Wake of Oya"
Saturday, September 29th 2007 from 7-midnight On Saturday, September 29th 2007, join Gabriela Garcia Medina in celebrating the official release of her new book "In the Wake of Oya", as well as her 25th Birthday. Gabriela Garcia Medina is an international spoken word artist and award-winning poet. She has performed at Colleges, Festivals, and Conferences all over the world. From the World Social Forum, Brazil (2004) to Havana Jazz Plaza (2001), her poetry has taken her to places such as South Africa, Cuba, Brazil, Switzerland and all over the United States. Her book "Ink-Scribing Oshun" toured nationally October 2006-April 2007. Her new book "In the Wake of Oya" was officially released on August 2nd 2007. Nationally, Gabriela Garcia Medina has been invited to participate in Festivals at many prestigious Colleges and Universities. She has performed at the Annual NCLR (National Council of La Raza) Conference in Miami (2007), at the Yale University Peabody Museum for the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Festival (2007); The Social Justice Summit at Cal State Fullerton (2006), Sarah Lawrence College (2007), to name a few. She has shared the stage with acts such as the Black Eyed Peas, Pitbull, Mos Def, among others. Gabriela has performed her poetry for numerous television stations. Most recently did a commercial for Dove Oil Cream Body Wash which features her poetry and performance. This past July, she also shot a commercial for Toyota Yaris where she is shown performing her poems. Some other noted performances and appearances have been for Local station KCET TV (Sept 2006/Sept 2007), National Cable Station SiTV ("On the Up" April 2007) and poetry pilot shows for NBC (Jan 2006) and MTV (May 2006). Gabriela has also performed several times on KPFK's Pacifica radio 90.7FM, and KPFA in San Francisco. Sheis also a Blogger for the "What's Hot" section of the SiTv Website, where 3 times a week she posts her poetry, journal entries and more. So come out and celebrate Gabriela's official book release party for "In the Wake of Oya"and her 25th Birthday on September 29th 2007. The event is open to the public, and a $5 suggested donation to pay for the space and the performing artists is being requested. This event will combine Gabriela's worlds, bridging together her love of poetry and art with her love of her Cuban roots and culture, mixing Spoken Word and Hip Hop with Afro-Cuban Rumba and Salsa. The night will consist of a Reception at 7:30pm, followed by a Performance featuring HBO Def Poets, International Dancers and, Live Music beginning promptly at 8pm, followed by a book-signing for "In the Wake of Oya" at 10pm, and followed by a party in celebration of Gabriela's 25th Birthday. Hosted by HBO Def Poet Besskepp, with appearances by Hip Hop/Modern Dancers. HBO Def Poet Mayda del Valle, HBO Def Poet Thea Monyee and, Quetzal Guerrero. With Live-Art by Alfie Numeric, Satva and Timoi, and music by DJ Melaaza.
