Avenue 50 Studio and the Southern California chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art (SCWCA) announce the opening of a community exhibition in honor of artist, educator and curator Deborah Thomas who passed away in December 2012. Large, lush abstract paintings from her days as a New York studio artist will hang alongside more current installations, writings and collaborative projects where she delved into photographs and text working with themes of family, found memory, landscape and the envionment.
The exhibition was organized by the SCWCA Eco-Art Collective, a member led-group dedicated to using creativity to address environmental concerns. Deborah was a long time member and recent curator of their "Wilderness Mind: Dissolving Duality" exhibition in San Pedro. She also participated for many years in the Arroyo Arts Collective where she first showed many of the installation and collaborative pieces that are featured in this exhibition. She previously curated the Day of the Dead Planet for Avenue 50 Studio in 2010 as well as the Bringing the Past to Light: New Art from Old Images, Intimate Geography: Getting To Know a Place and Estate of Mind exhibitions. In addition to working as a fine artist and curator, she taught art history and theory, literature and cultural studies in Los Angeles; New York; Geneva, Switzerland; and Philadelphia.
The public is invited to bring a small remembrance in image or word (no larger than 5" x 5") when visiting the gallery.
