“Lost Languages” Connie Rohman

unnamed

The annex will feature Connie Rohman, an artist working with fabric and fiber as a chosen medium.

Artist Statement

I’ve always been fascinated by language and how we use it, and how it evolves over time. The Lost Languages series looks at communication systems that are no longer being used in this digital age; Morse Code, marine signal flags, cursive writing , and shorthand are all visual ways of communicating that are already, or are becoming, extinct.

Much interest has been shown in the Lost Language series.  People are happy to be engaged in the process of deciphering the works, and many share enthusiasm for presenting these lost languages as visual art.  One of my Morse Code pieces is currently travelling in a two year international exhibition entitled “Text Messages”.

Artist Bio

I am an artist working with fabric and fiber as my chosen medium.  I moved to Los Angeles over 30 years ago, and now the Los Angeles landscape and culture exerts a strong influence on my color choices and my artwork.

The texture of fabric draws me to explore its’ material uses.  The woven fibers and sewn lines add unusual character to my art.  Also, fabric is evocative of my Quaker childhood in British Columbia, Canada, where I learned to sew at an early age on my grandmother’s treadle sewing machine.  I use my own hand dyed fabric, and ethically sourced  world textiles in my work.

Artistic highlights include two solo shows; at the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, and  this exhibition at Ave 50 Studio.  My artwork has been included in many group shows, and I have been invited to both jury and curate various art exhibitions.
