Monotype Printmaking Workshop

This workshop will cover the basics of monotype using hand printed layers of water based inks from Speedball’s Akua liquid pigment product line.

Students will use Dur-a-lar wet media film for the 5″ x 7” printing plate, hinged with artist’s tape to smooth finish Bristol Board paper over a work surface of smooth polycarbonate. The image will be developed and registered using a drawing made with a Sharpie pen on the back side of the plate. The drawing needs to be fairly simple so that we can get through printing each of the four layers within the two hour time slot.

Students will then roll out the inks with soft rubber brayers, making marks with cotton swabs and toothpicks and brushes, then printing the layers one at a time using a Bondo spreader. All of these steps can be repeated in your home studio with minimal equipment.
