NELAscapes

Curated by Ramses Martinez

Students were encouraged to draw how they see and feel about North East Los Angeles. These “NELAscapes” are abstract expressions of the visual fabric that Franklin High School youth appreciate from their part of the city, Northeast Los Angeles. The spirited artworks communicate their beliefs and feelings through a visual language that describe aspects of their community. While exploring their creativity throughout such illustrations, they are collecting memories of important spaces, thoughts on gentrification, and ideas of what sets their community apart.
