Please join us for a very special book reading:
Remembering Frida: Chicana/o essays, music, and art reflecting on the impact of Frida on our lives.
Edited by Roberta “LaVela” Orona-Cordova
ROBERTA ORONA-CORDOVA will tell the story of the inspiration for and the process of creating the anthology
LARA MEDINA will read from her essay “Imagining Self and Frida” on how Frida’s bold indigena aesthetic has offered Chicanas a way back home to our cultural roots
MARIA ELENA FERNANDEZ’s “FK Nopal en la Frente” is a sarcastic and funny take on her love-hate relationship with Frida and Fridamania
SYBIL VENEGAS “The Chicana as Tehuana” explains her discovery that Frida’s trademark indigena style was influenced by an L.A. Chicana on the Mexico City arts scene
ANTONIA GARCIA-OROZCO will sing her original song, “Y Unos Cuantos Piquetitos,” powerful and heartbreaking, based on Frida’s art
The art in the anthology by local artists Mita Cuaron and Emilia Garcia, as well as by Yreina Cervantez and Carlos Reyes Guerrero, will also be featured.
2pm-4pm
Avenue 50 Studio, Los Angeles
