St. Valentine: The Subversive

St. Valentine: The Subversive

Curated by Kathy Gallegos

We think hearts and chocolate, but did you know Valentinus is a saint for being subversive? When the Roman Emperor issued a ban on marriage (because he wanted it easy to conscript single men to fight his wars), Valentinus, a humble priest, defied the government and fought the injustice by continuing to marry any couple that requested it. For this act of bravery, he was executed… and became St. Valentine. Ban on marriage? Love as political subversion? Government oppression of relationships? Is this 269 AD or now?
