A mobile Luminaria workshop will take place along the corridor throughout the day, featuring papel picado workshops.

Workshops will begin at 12pm at Food4Less, 5100 N. Figueroa Street.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS:

Margaret Sosa has been working as a paper cutter in the Mexican style known as papel
picado for over 30 years. She learned the art form from master paper cutter, Olga Ponce
Furginson, serving as her apprentice for many years. To further her skills, she traveled
with Olga to Mexico to meet Mexican papel picado artists. Margaret has received
countless commissions for her work and several master artist grants to teach papel
picado. Working with community centers such as Self Help Graphics, Ave 50 Studio and
Plaza De La Raza, she has taught children and adults of all ages. Margaret’s work has
been exhibited galleries and museums throughout the Los Angeles area and as far away
as Glasgow Scotland. Margaret is a graduate of California State University Los Angeles,
where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art. Margaret lives in Los
Angeles with her husband, she has five children and ten grandchildren.


Maricela Sosa will be joining her mother for the Luminarias art day.

Maricela is a self taught art instructor working in Los Angeles. Currently she teaches art classes to children and adults at Plaza De La Raza. She works from home making papel picado; a Mexican folk art that her mother artist Margaret Sosa taught her. Maricela has given art workshops at Self Help Graphics, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, Autry Museum of the American West, Ave. 50 Studio, Mi Vida Boutique, Barrio Action and  Plaza De La Raza. She has also worked with her mother giving countless workshops in papel picado at festivals, art organizations and galleries throughout Los Angeles.

Maricela enjoys working in her community and sharing her love for the arts.
