From Dark Into Light: Legacies of Resistance

Artists Robbin Légère Henderson and Juan Fuentes join forces to create an exhibition steeped in history, social welfare, and our shared humanity. Their etchings, scratchboard drawings and silk-screened prints speak personally to the struggle for equal rights and social justice.

Currents

“For this exhibition, Currents, I have worked on twelve new paintings/collages that
are works in progress, like pages from a sketch book, that explore a range of
current events and social issues. I am deeply interested in the intersection of the
arts, communities, and social justice, and these new works focus on climate
change, genocide, the arts and culture, border issues, information dissemination,
sun violence, and more. I believe that the arts have the power to call attention to
important issues and additionally the arts have the power to transform lives and
hopefully change minds.” – Glenna Avila

drop by drop

“I have always found comfort when connecting to nature. As part of that ongoing conversation, I work with natural and existing materials, such as plant life, water, stone and detritus that originate from sites that represent their local character.

This current work revolves around the daily study of the evolution of plant decay and water. It expresses the beauty I witness in things that some might not dare touch.

Over the course of the last 3 years – beginning in the pandemic, Drop by Drop developed.

Each day, as I looked out my kitchen window, I observed and photographed the stark beauty of the cyclic, seasonal procession of nature; growth and vivid life, followed by withering and decay – a different form of survival. By also introducing older collections of native plant life from the Mojave Desert, Iceland and Denmark, vignettes of a different kind connected and emerged.

This body of work presented challenges. Typically, I work in muted colors, or some might say “the lack of color”. I find natural, cool and muted tones inherently found in the process of decay actually calming. I experience color as a sensation – a result of the way objects reflect or emit light. With this in mind, I included light as an instrumental element in each composition – resulting in a much more vibrant color palette. Surprisingly, it made me uncomfortable in an unexpected way, and at the same time, brought me joy – providing an innate poetry of its own.” —- Victoria Arriola

Inner Machinations

“My work is a multimedia exploration and re-presentation of the natural world. Investigating our perceptions, valuations and representations, I examine both natural and crafted objects, alongside their relationships between one another.

Through a material fusion, shaping and transformation into natural symbols, I reference the sublime by using scale and spatial distortions. I’m emphasizing a visceral relationship to flowers, fungi, insects, nautical beings and other unseen creatures through constructed mixed-media forms. Expressively organic and dynamic, each work is animated by its contoured shape and environmental relationships. Visual presence, economic cycles, evolution and attraction are themes I hybridize in order to realize an active engagement with nature.

My work aims to foster empathy and elevate awareness of our interconnected web, spotlighting how our worlds intertwine.” — Trevor Coopersmith
