Corazon de Oro: Appreciating the Imperfect

““You have a heart of gold” was a memorable phrase my mom used to say. She used this phrase to describe the strengths and assets found within people worth recognizing and remembering. It was a way of giving respect and esteem to someone others may perceive as without value.

The “Corazón de oro” altar installation commemorates personal “heroes” by transforming them into icons within ofrendas (offerings) and connects family history to a much larger, communal history. The altar presents a space for revealing virtues and knowledge within the everyday and imperfect, while also providing a platform for confronting social issues impacting communities of color.”
