About:
Giving offerings to our ancestors is an indigenous practice in the so-called Philippines that predates Catholocism. It is a way of honoring our ancestors and the time they spent with us on this physical plane. Once a year, many cultures around the world take the time to honor our ancestors, such as ‘Dia de los Muertos’ in Mexico, ‘Pchum Ben’ in Cambodia and many more. In Philippine culture, ‘Araw Ng Mga Patay’ (translating to Day of the Dead in Tagalog – a Philippine language) is a day we reflect on the remembrance of our passed loved ones.
The intention of this exhibition is to highlight how Filipinx-American visual artists use art as a platform to honor our loved ones in the spirit world. Visual artworks selected for this exhibition become an offering to our ancestors in itself.
Please bring an offering for the community altar.
