Coming Out of the Dark
The general theme of this exhibit is a reflection on the past two years of the Covid pandemic. As we now realize, those times did indeed change our way of thinking. For artists it meant that many gallery venues were closed or very limited. For some it meant that travel to foreign sites were out of the question.
As these artists passed through those times, they responded individually. Perhaps it meant a change in their subject matter or perhaps it forced a change of attitude towards materials or techniques. Artists had to look within themselves more intently. One can say that the creative spirit was challenged and, in a sense, was reborn. These changes in outlook forced a documentary response or perhaps a pulling away from reality.
The darkness of these days are now illuminated by the work that one sees in this exhibit. Illustrating this new energy is the work of Biz Lopez, Isabel Martinez, Ilya Navarrete, Norman Schwab, Olga Seem, Roderick Smith, Howard Swerdloff, Richard Turner, Alex Wiesenfeld, Lilly Yanagita, Katsu Yokoyama and myself.
